Thesis Driven Essay

Write a four-five paragraph thesis driven essay on one of the following prompts.

Essay Prompt One: Write an essay analyzing the conflict around environmental racism in the

play by using two key images and two concrete examples from the play. You will need to

define environmental racism using the definition provided in class. And remember you need to

analyze the images in connection to the conflict. This means do not just summarize the play by

restating what is obvious. Then, your conclusion should include what you think Moraga (the

playwright) might be saying needs to change in the community in order to address environmental

racism. To do this you will need to make a connection between the examples you analyze and a

potential way to transform the community, as depicted in the play. You may want to consider the

specific attitudes certain characters have on this conflict. Does that character seem to be showing

a way to help the community? If so, who and how?

Essay Prompt Two: Write an essay analyzing how the play (based on details) defines “Heroes”

and “Saints?” What’s the difference between a hero and a saint, according to the play? Who is an

example of each and why? Consider which one of the main characters was most interesting to

you and where you think they fit in defining a hero and/or a saint. Some of the main characters

are: Dolores, Mario, Father Juan, Cerezita, and Yolanda. Consider who takes action in helping

their community the most and how. Also, consider who takes action for their own lives? By

closely reading the depictions of heroes and saints, analyze (don’t just summarize) what

Moraga may be suggesting about the role of Catholicism within this conflict/play. Your

conclusion should analyze what the play is suggesting about how the community could be

uplifted or helped by either a hero or a saint, or both and why.
