MO1: Construct the null and research hypothesis and determine potential errors. (CO2)
This module introduced you to hypothesis testing. When testing hypotheses, there is always the chance
that researchers make errors. In the readings you learned about two types of errors: Type | and Type Il.
When you set up hypothesis tests or interpret results from others’ hypothesis tests, it is important to
understand the nature of these errors.
Carefully read through the section on Type | and Type Il errors in your textbooks. In the Bachman and
Paternoster text, see page 163. In the Salkind text, see pages 225-228.
Create a fictional research study and respond to the following:
Write a nuil hypothesis and a research hypothesis for your study.
Describe in detail what the Type | and Type II errors would look like in your fictional test.
Make some judgments about which type of error is worse for your fictional research study. Which error type
would lead you to draw conclusions and make decisions that diverge more from reality?
