INTRODUCTION

In this experiment, we will titrate a sample of wine with aqueous sodium hydroxide to determine the concentration of tartaric acid in the wine. We will make the assumption that tartaric acid is the only acid present in appreciable amounts in the wine. The balanced chemical equation for the reaction can be written a few different ways (Any of these REACTION formats is acceptable. Choose the REACTION format that is easiest for you to interpret.):

Showing the acidic hydrogens in the front of the acid’s formula:

H2C4H4O6 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) → 2 H2O (l) + 2 Na+ (aq) + C4H4O62– (aq)
OR
H2C4H4O6 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) → 2 H2O (l) + Na2C4H4O6 (aq)

Emphasizing the fact that the tartaric acid contains carboxylic acid groups:
C2H4O2(COOH)2 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) → 2 H2O (l) + 2 Na+ (aq) + C2H4O2(COO–)2 (aq)
