“Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly. They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system's ability to see patterns and trends.”- Wikipedia
For this assignment you will be creating an infographic looking at a TNC of your choice. And infographic contains a limited amount of well-chosen words that combine with visuals that make a clear point. They are meant to get a point across quickly with facts and figures. They are visually appealing and make people want to stop and read them. You can think of yours as poster size. If you were walking down the street and this poster was on a wall would you stop and read it?
The main focus of this assignment is to show your audience how large TNC connect to conditions of poverty around the world. We want to show two sides: the company’s head (CEO, main company, headquarters etc.) and the workers that create, mine or farm the product. For this we are looking at a company that sells something that is manufactured. In other words, it works in the primary and/or secondary and tertiary industries. Great examples of companies that are easy to research are those in the chocolate and coffee industries as well as some clothing brands and lithium for cell phone batteries.
The infographic needs three sections:
1) Information and graphics about the company.
For example: Where is its headquarters? What is its value and/or annual earnings/sales? What does it do? CEO/head salary? Size of the company; perhaps in comparison to a country. Price range of products. Places of operations and sales. Show what is important about that company.
2) Information and graphics about the primary and secondary workers.
For example: Where are the factories? What are the labour conditions and salaries? How does this compare to other countries? Is there child labour? It would be easiest to research this information first and then look up the company.
3) You can take 2 approaches to the third section.
A) If your information to #2 is really bad you can offer solutions to the situation. IE How can the consumer help workings conditions in that country? Consider which companies consumers should buy from or fair-trade products.
B) You can create a pros and cons comparison to having this company operate the way it does in respects to the poor worker. Why is this a good job for them? Why is it a bad job for them? How does it compare to other opportunities they have?
Your audience is the consumer of the products of the company. What should an informed consumer know about this company or product? Have a clear message for the audience. Even with less writing and more visuals, you still need to make sure your points are easy to follow and make your arguments. The above questions are to get you thinking; you do not need to answer each question but you do need to provide information and graphics for the three sections.
