Twitter and Tear Gas

      Impact and role of technology on social movements. While analyzing historical and current movements, students will conduct a study of the uses and meanings of a Twitter hashtag associated with an ongoing social movement (ex: #blacIdivesmatter, #saveDACA, #NoDAPL, #NiUnaMas #ClimateJustice, #vivaBerta). We are investigating how people use Twitter to discuss and organize social movements. What rhetorical strategies do Twitter users when deploying a hashtag? What tactical roles do Twitter users develop by using social media or a particular hashtag? Based on your study of the way users deployed the hashtag, what is one major debate within the social movement that has most shaped how the movement has developed?
