The Generation Like documentary delves into the world of social media in an attempt to understand and
explain both the consumers and producers of this content (often the same people). In this coverage, they
present a number of "stars" made possible only through social media (for example, Tyler Oakley and
Steven Fernandez, aka Baby Scumbag). Do a little research on one of the social media celebrities
mentioned in the film. Find out where this person is now and what they have accomplished. Are they still
"living the dream?"
Then write a response of 150-400 words in which you discuss the pressures of social media and how it is
changing our attitudes toward each other. How have these media shaped the way in which we share
information about ourselves, our lives, etc.? Do you see these media as presenting opportunities? Or are
they exploiting (or allowing others to exploit) users and content generators?
