Umoja Monitoring Project

Rationale When Umoja ERP was introduced in the UN Secretariat, it was expected to address most of the weaknesses of the old Galileo system. Other than automating transactions, the new system was meant to centralize routine processes and activities. Umoja was designed to follow processes that are mapped like workflows with a series of steps, which were executed as transactions by users. However, most of these benefits are yet to be realized and the rationale of this study is to investigate why the system does not work as it was envisioned and to recommend solutions to the current problems facing its implementation. Objectives • To find out why some processes, transactions and roles are unclear. • To investigate the causes of the weaknesses of the systems allowing it to accept inaccurate data and store incomplete transactions. • To explore how the current shortcomings of Umoja ERP can be overcome. • To determine the kind of monitoring and control system that is needed to improve sustainability of Umoja ERP. • To determine the kind of training that is needed for the users to feed uniform, accurate, and complete data into the system • To determine the types of feedback mechanisms that will increase the intelligence of the system so that it does not accepts wrong data or process incomplete transactions.
