Incidences or contacts with police vary by demographics, age, race and gender.
Examine Tables 11, 12, 17, 18 and 21 from the link below
https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cpp15.pdf
Next, integrate the data from the tables with information on link below. Explain the tenuous relationship
between police and the public and why the perception of the police is decreased in lower socioeconomic areas.

1) What factors are present that would likely cause a person between the ages of 18-24 have more contacts
with police? Either, reporting a crime or a traffic stop? What about the gender differences? Why would a
younger person be more vulnerable to be victimized or be stopped by police? Allude to the tables in the article
above citing the stats given, and then provide reasons as to why younger people have more contacts with
police. (Hint: what do y'all do over the weekend that most old people like myself don't do anymore! :o) )
2) What factor(s) are present that would likely cause a minority to be victimized or to be stopped by the police
more often? Why are African Americans searched and arrested at a much higher rate? Could this be a sign of
racial profiling?
3) Why might people who live in high crime and low income areas have more contacts with the police?(Think
about the schools, and housing in these areas) Why might their perception of the police be less then
favorable? If someone is victimized in one of these poverty stricken areas how likely are they to report the
crime to police?
