Wk 1, we discussed elements of literature and the art of active, responsive reading. Now, let’s take a closer look at poetic devices. Poetry is a popular mode of emotive and creative expression. Authors can implement a wide variety of techniques to raise the reader’s interest. Some of these techniques are imagery, symbolism, and rhyming conventions.
Option 1
The person talking to us in a poem is called the speaker of the poem or the I of the poem. The speaker of a poem is not a narrator. Choose a poem we are reading this week. Name the speaker and tell us what s/he is saying. Explain how you came to decide what the speaker is saying, meaning explain certain language or image/s or symbol/s or how the poet uses other poetic devices.
Option 2
Theme in poetry means what a poem is about. In a sentence, explain what imagery in poetry means. Then choose a poem we are reading this week. Name its theme or issue, what the author may be saying about that issue, and explain how some of the imagery in that poem helped you come to that meaning.
Additional Discussion Questions:
How does imagery connect a reader to understanding the meaning of a poem? Which poetic device that creates imagery do you think is the most powerful? Why?
We use figurative language in everyday life. What are some instances when you have used it or heard it?
