While being a Human Resources manager at a large distribution site during a downturn in the economy there are certain to be cuts made within the company that will make the employees unhappy, which may be unavoidable. With the loss in revenue cuts to cost of living adjustments, and cuts or cancelations of bonuses may have to be necessary. This will most definitely anger employees, however if there are no cuts in salaries or personnel they may be satisfied once learning there are no plans for lay-offs or firings. Hardships and trying times are in escapable in life, which is why we should be reminded of Mathew 11:28 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. According to an article by Gudivada Rao happiness is based on a multitude of items at the workplace. “The facets of motivation are satisfaction levels with policies, supervision, pay, interpersonal relations, opportunities for promotion and growth, working conditions and the work itself” (Rao. Pg. 2).
In order to ensure a smooth work flow and that operations are not stopped; I would send out a mass email and post notices on high traffic areas within the workplace to show that we are determined to maintain our workforce with no cuts to salary or to personnel, but cuts to COLA and bonus will be cancelled this year due to a slow year in demand. I would provide proper instruction to all managers to ensure that they are able to answer all questions employees may have. However, when it comes to employees unionizing it can be tricky, as there are many laws preventing employers from interfering with unionizing efforts. As an article by Jessica Garrick puts it “employers are allowed to campaign endlessly against unionization, while union supporters may only discuss the benefits of unionization in break areas during break times” (Garrick, Pg. 5). It would be imperative that the companies plan for the future out ways the benefits of the employees need to unionize. As the company should be looking out for its most important resource, its workforce, it should do its best to ensure that unionization is not necessary.
