Sample Solution
The American Civil War, which raged from 1861-1865, is arguably one of the most significant and defining events in United States history. It was a conflict that pitted an entire nation against itself, brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor — all in pursuit of a cause they believed to be righteous. The causes of the war were complex and multifaceted; slavery being one of the main sources of contention between North and South. In addition to this issue, states’ rights (or lack thereof) regarding tariffs, taxes and government policies also played an important role in escalating tensions between the two regions.
At its core, however, this struggle was more than just about politics: it was a moral battle fought over issues such as human dignity and personal liberty. For almost four years citizens from each side sacrificed their lives for what they felt was right - either preserving or abolishing slavery across the country depending on which side you favored - making it one of America’s bloodiest wars to date with over 600 000 deaths recorded (although estimates could be much higher).
