Generally speaking, though, many of the borders in question have been contested by different cultures and nations throughout centuries, resulting in a diverse mix of peoples from various backgrounds. For example, along the U.S.-Mexico border there is a great deal of diversity among indigenous populations, including Apache and Yaqui communities as well as those with Spanish colonial roots.
