Choose one text we have read so far that seem to be “unrealistic” (Ten Nights’ Dreams, Miyazawa Kenji’s stories, etc.) and put it in dialogue with one of the more “realistic” texts we have read. Discuss a thematic element that both stories share, and demonstrate how they arrive at this theme differently. Some questions you could address: Does the similarity you find make the status or “realistic” and “unrealistic” more complicated? How so? What makes these stories appear different? Is it a question of genre? Style? Word choice? Try to think about what may be “modern” about your unrealistic text, and not modern about the realistic one.
