Answer the following questions in a word document (~300 words) and upload the document to “Assignment-Chapter 4” dropbox folder on folio. Make sure to name the file as described in the course syllabus.
Look back at the videos you watched from the sources header above (the Khan Academy videos and the New Boston video), and answer the bulleted questions below:
● For the Khan Academy videos:
i. Metabolism is described as a balance between which two major categories of reactions? How do these categories differ? Which category is used to obtain energy from food for immediate use? Which category of reactions is used to store energy for later use?
ii. The second video describes hormones briefly. Compare and contrast hormones and enzymes. Insulin is a hormone that is described in the video and in your book – what does insulin do and which major category of reaction does it control?
● For the New Boston video:
i. What is a substrate? What is a ‘product’?
ii. What is an enzyme’s active site? Relate active site, substrate and product.
iii. The lecturer mentions that there are many different enzymes, each catalyzing a specific reaction. Why so many? Why not just one enzyme to catalyze all reactions?
