Healthcare providers, especially nurses, are vital in the provision of quality care to patients. For instance, Nurse Practitioners (NP) are vital in providing quality care to patients and improving their clinical outcomes. However, specific state regulations limit NP’s licensure. For instance, certain states, such as California and New York, require NPs to acquire higher education to get licenses (American Association Of Nurses Practitioners, 2022). In New York and California, an NP must have a Registered Nurse License and a graduate degree to obtain licenses to practice. In North Dakota, an NP must receive national certification from a credible body such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) to be eligible for licensure.
The evolving demand for quality care necessitates the need for competent nurses to provide quality care to patients and improve overall clinical service delivery. As a result, there are several requirements that an NP must acquire to obtain licensure to operate in various states. For example, an NP is a healthcare provider with a masters degree and expertise in primary care or acute care (Nies & McEwen, 2019). These requirements for licensure make NPs competent to practice and provide quality care. The drawback associated with the licensure requirement is the duration to obtain the education level.
Telehealth has been vital in providing quality care to patients in rural areas. Telehealth involves healthcare providers delivering care where distance is a factor through information and communication system (Diegel-Vacek et al., 2021). However, NPs often face challenges attending to patients through telehealth due to restrictive licensure that requires them to work only in the state they have their license. Additionally, a compact state positively affects NPs by permitting them to hold a multistate license and the freedom to operate in those states. In the U.S., the changing telehealth reimbursement policies in various states negatively affect NPs.
