Voltaire, like many of his generation, was very well-rounded and pursued a number of interests: writing, philosophy, history, and criticism — especially about the Catholic church. Do a little research on him and bring us a portrait of his activities and as much of his personality as you can discern. He was a fierce advocate of freedom: of speech, religion, and especially of the right of the people to be free from the yoke of state-sponsored religion. Give us a brief biography of him. It will have to be very selective as much is known about him — all of it fascinating — so you will need to choose your focal points carefully. For the purposes of the class, perhaps the best approach would be to focus on his philosophy, his disdain for religion — while still being a firm believer in a supreme being -- and his fierce defense of freedom of speech, though his personal life (especially living with his lover and her husband for over 10 years) is pretty interesting and always intriguing.
