Your task is to issue your perspective on the greater debate suggested by Booker T Washington and WEB Du Bois.
The question is which strategy would have worked better. You can find a line between the two, but that takes greater skill to argue. It is safer to try argue one side or the other.
On the one side, there is the question of ensuring the success of the highest minded. This is summed up by WEB Du Bois's quote: "The Negro Race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men. The problem of education then, among Negroes, must first of all deal with the 'Talented Tenth.' It is the problem of developing the best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the worst."
On the other side, there is Booker T Washington's viewpoint, that the masses must be trained and that all people (specifically African-Americans in his case) need to learn labor skills, to serve others, and to gain contact with people of a generous spirit.
As we go, I will discuss more about this issue.
