Web of Oppression

1. Do your own Personal "Web of Oppression". 2. What was your experience like for you to discover the "intersections" and Power dynamics? 3. How do you perceive how your combined positions affect your experience. Have you ever experienced an act of unconscious aggression directed at you because of some subordinate group identity you may have? 4. How do you usually cope with these acts of unconscious aggression or avoidance that you experience? 5. Have you ever committed an act of unconscious aggression or aversion in your role as a member of a dominant group? If you can recall such an event, did you do it alone or in conjunction with other members of your identity group? Given your current understanding of unconscious acts of aggression or avoidance, would you do anything differently If the situation were to arise again? If so what? 6. Make a list of your identities that have a positive value attached to them by society (e.g., white, male). Make a list of your identities that you have a negative value attached to them by society (e.g., poor). What do you think is your master (most prominent) identity? WHY? 7. Make a list of the privileges you enjoy that are associated with each positive Identity. Make a list of negative experiences you have had that are attached to each negative Identity. Which was most difficult to compile-positive or negatives? WHY? 8. If you are a member of a subordinate group, how do you usually cope with the negative treatment you receive because of your perceived inferior identity? Do you use humor to deal with it? Do you strike out verbally or some other way? 9. Growing up how did your neighborhood look? Were you proud of where you lived growing up compared to now? 10. At any time in your life were you embarrassed by your childhood and/or family?
