1.What is volition? Consider a slip of the tongue you've just made. Then repeat it at will. What is the difference?
The words are the same, the speaker is the same, the movements of the vocal tract are the same. The
difference is only that the slip is involuntary and its repetition is voluntary. This is a way to compare very similar
actions that differ only in whether there is voluntary control.
Explore the difference between identical actions that are voluntary and those that are involuntary. What are
some examples? Combing your hair intentionally as you get dressed vs. combing your hair "by mistake" as you
walk through the bedroom looking for a book. Jingling coins in your pocket voluntarily vs. non-voluntarily--- an
everyday automatism. Driving home fully attentively vs. driving home mostly "unconsciously." Compare slips of
the tongue to other non-voluntary actions including automatisms, action errors, and psychopathologies.
Discuss your findings in terms of the principles in this section.
