whistle blower

A whistleblower is an employee or agent of a business or organization that reports on the business or organization's illicit activity. These employees or agents would be unlikely to report on their employer's activity unless the employees were protected from workplace retaliation. Whistleblower protection is a part of both state and federal law. Whistleblowers are protected from retaliation in the workplace through the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Federal False Claims Act, and the Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989. Florida also provides protections for whistleblowers at the state level through the Florida False Claims Act (Fla. Stat. s. 68.081). Despite these legal protections, in some studies, 60% of whistleblowers report to being retaliated against in the workplace. See Research Triangle Institute. (1995). Consequences of whistleblowing for the whistleblower in misconduct in science cases.Report submitted to Office of Research Integrity. For this assignment, research whistleblower protection laws and the policy behind those protections. Also research cases where whistleblowers suffered retaliation due to their reports. Write a research paper, no less than five pages in length, that discusses and defines whistleblower protection laws, policy, and retaliation. Analyze the cases you researched to identify whether or not the laws intended to protect whistleblowers from retaliation were effective to protect the employees and/or the businesses. Using your research and analysis, identify strengths and weaknesses of current whistleblower protections (federal and/or state level), and offer solutions, if you think any are necessary, to either weaken or strengthen the current laws.
