Who are the family members

Write a paper that includes the information listed below. If you read an autobiography or watch a documentary, your ability to answer these particular questions will be somewhat dependent on the documentary or book you choose. If any of the requested information does not apply to your case study, clearly explain this in your paper and add information from additional sources as needed.

  1. In your introductory paragraph, describe whether your case study is based on an autobiographical book, documentary, or in-person interview. If you selected an autobiography or documentary, provide the name of the book or documentary, the name of the author or director, and the year of publication/production. If your case study is based on in-person interviews, provide pseudonyms for the people you interviewed. You should also state the child’s exceptionality and provide a brief rationale for why you selected this particular case study.
  2. Describe the child and family. Who are the family members? Describe the unique characteristics, values, routines and culture of the family. What are the family’s goals for the child for the near future and for adulthood? What words/labels does the family use to talk about their child’s disability/giftedness? Are these different than the words/labels used by service providers in the child’s life? How has the family’s culture influenced their experience of the child’s exceptionality?
  3. Describe the child’s exceptionality and its impact on the child and family. Discuss any changes in the child’s exceptionality and its impact from early childhood through early adulthood (or the child’s current age). Address impacts on the child’s development as appropriate (cognitive, physical, social and emotional), as well as impacts on family relationships and functioning. This is where you should include information from the 6 required sources. Compare and contrast the child’s characteristics and experiences with the information you researched on common characteristics for this exceptionality. Also include research on how the exceptionality may impact family functioning and dynamics.
  4. Who are the service providers in this child’s life? What are their roles? How does the family feel about the services they have received? What has been the quality of the collaboration between the family and service providers? Include outside research on these issues as appropriate (e.g., what services do children with this exceptionality commonly need; what services have been shown to be effective?)
  5. Describe the extent of inclusion of the child in family, school and community environments. What are some of the barriers to full inclusion? How could the child have been/be more effectively included? Include outside research on these issues as appropriate (e.g., are students with this exceptionality often fully included in general classrooms; what factors promote successful inclusion for students with this exceptionality?)
  6. 7-9 sources! Include an APA-style reference page at the end of the paper. Provide the complete citation for the documentary or autobiography you selected, as well as all journal articles, edited book chapters, websites or other sources you used. See additional information on APA style and a sample reference page on Canvas.

Format and Due Date: Your final paper must be 8-10 pages, not including the reference page(s). Your paper should be typed and double-spaced with Times New Roman 12 point font and 1-inch margins. Do NOT include a title page. Save your assignment in a Word compatible file format (.doc, .docx) or as a pdf. I cannot view or download Mac files (e.g., .pages) in Canvas.

Include APA-style citations for your sources in the body of your paper (e.g., Mannering et al., 2011) and list each source in a References page at the end. Include a citation after each sentence in which you provide factual information, research findings, ideas, or quotations from one of your sources. It is not acceptable in APA format to cite sources only at the end of the paragraph. Err on the side of including citations too often versus not often enough.
When referring to a source or study in your paper, do NOT include the title of the article or the journal title in the body of your paper. Instead, refer to the authors by last name. For example:

In their study of marital instability and infant sleep problems, Mannering and colleagues (2011) found that higher instability at 9 months predicted greater sleep problems at 18 months.

When using a direct quotation from one of your sources, include the page number where you found the quotation with the in-text citation. For example:

According to Smith and Jones, “Blah, blah, blah” (Smith & Jones, 2013, p. 2).
