What You’ll Be Doing--Description:
A position paper is defined as “a written report outlining someone's attitude or intentions regarding a particular matter”. In this assignment we’ll be exploring the various sides of a controversial subject such as climate change, social media or violent video games. The assignment requires you to:
Describe an issue that has been the focus of debate,
Stake out your position on the issue, and
Give your reasons for holding that position
How You’ll Be Doing It--Composition:
The first step in developing this assignment will be to decide upon a subject. You’ll want to make sure that your subject provides adequate fodder for discussion, meaning that it should be a debatable and controversial topic with two or more sides to the issue. The second step is to explore your own attitude and beliefs in regard to the subject. This essay will require you to conduct some amount of research, and we will discuss ways of approaching that task, and methods for citing the sources you use. Peer review will be a necessary step in the development of this assignment.
What It Should Look Like--Constraints:
Length: 3-4 pages (900 – 1000 words) (not including works cited page).
Please type (12 point font) your paper and double space it using one-inch margins; this requirement is not an arbitrary obsession with form. Studies have shown that teachers react in different ways to different formatting. By standardizing your paper format, I can guarantee us both an equitable reading of your work.
You must make use of at least two to three (2 - 3) sources. Each should be documented using standard MLA style.
