William Trevor and George Moore

The stories we read by William Trevor and George Moore all were concerned in some way with the theme

of individual identity -- (1) with the ways in which individual identity changes over time, (2) with the ways in

which one's private self and public self are complexly related, and (3) with the ways in which one's

hypothetical "what-if" or "might-have-been" identities related to roads not taken and alternatives not

chosen have a life of their own in our minds, memories, and emotions.
Please discuss any of these issues in the work of BOTH authors. You may write one essay in which you

combine the consideration of both authors through comparison and/or contrast, or you may write a

separate essay on each author. Also you may choose to focus on one of the three issues listed above in

both authors or you may choose to focus on one issue in one author and on another issue in the other

author.
