Dadaism originated in Zurich, Germany where a group of artists lived together during World War I. The war began in 1914 after the assassination to the Austro-Hungarian Empire heir, Archduke Franz Ferinandad and his wife on June 28, 1914. The couple was killed by a nationalist from Serbia, Gavrilo Pirncip. Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire joined together to fight France, Russia, Great Britain, Romania, Italy, Japan, and the United States. Over sixteen million people were killed during the war that finally ended in 1918.
During this time, many of the artists fled their own countries for safety during the war, they held events and different types of activities to keep themselves busy and to try and keep their minds off the war and out of that, Dada was born.
Dada was an artistic movement that was anti-artistic. Dadaism is more about questioning what is art and what makes art art? The artists involved in the movement did not necessarily all share the same style of art. Instead, they shared a passion for challenging artistic standards and creating a new concept of what art is. It may seem like nonsense to some, but to the people involved it was an escape and free space to react to the world around them.
