Due to fin” rel=”nofollow”>inancial pressures that many hospitals face, the Deaconess Clin” rel=”nofollow”>inic in” rel=”nofollow”>in Billin” rel=”nofollow”>ings, Montana, decided to outsource a number of services, although in” rel=”nofollow”>in somewhat different ways.
First, the hospital outsourced its cafeteria food service. Although the food service employees were hired by the outside firm, they still felt a sense of ownership of their jobs, and still felt connected to the hospital because of the family atmosphere in” rel=”nofollow”>in the kitchen and the cafeteria.
When the hospital tried the same thin” rel=”nofollow”>ing with housekeepin” rel=”nofollow”>ing, employee turnover became a problem. An in” rel=”nofollow”>investigation revealed that because the housekeepin” rel=”nofollow”>ing employees were more isolated in” rel=”nofollow”>in their work, they lost what little feelin” rel=”nofollow”>ing of bein” rel=”nofollow”>ing connected to the hospital they had. The problem was solved by hirin” rel=”nofollow”>ing the employees back but usin” rel=”nofollow”>ing the outsource company to manage housekeepin” rel=”nofollow”>ing.
The hospital also decided to outsource its laundry service. This time the hospital approached a rival hospital about join” rel=”nofollow”>inin” rel=”nofollow”>ing it in” rel=”nofollow”>in outsourcin” rel=”nofollow”>ing laundry service.
1. In some in” rel=”nofollow”>instances the outsourced service occurs in” rel=”nofollow”>in a different location, while in” rel=”nofollow”>in others it takes place in” rel=”nofollow”>inside the organization doin” rel=”nofollow”>ing the outsourcin” rel=”nofollow”>ing, as the food service did in” rel=”nofollow”>in this case. What advantages were there in” rel=”nofollow”>in havin” rel=”nofollow”>ing the outsourced work performed within” rel=”nofollow”>in the hospital? Suppose a different hospital outsourced its food service but decided not to have the work performed in” rel=”nofollow”>in-house. What might its rationale be?
2. In the housekeepin” rel=”nofollow”>ing situation, why not just forget about outsourcin” rel=”nofollow”>ing, especially sin” rel=”nofollow”>ince the hospital ended up rehirin” rel=”nofollow”>ing its employees anyway?
3. For laundry service, what might have been the rationale for askin” rel=”nofollow”>ing another hospital to join” rel=”nofollow”>in it?
