1. Compare the following two sculptures featured in your book:

• Woman (aka the Venus of Willendorf), ca. 25,000-20,000 BCE, (pg 394 in newer book)
• Augustus of Primaporta, ca. 20 BCE (pg 411 in newest book)

• 1a: From looking at and reading about these pieces, what are you able to tell about the cultures that produced them? What did they value? (2-3 sentences)
• 1b: Compare and contrast how the human body is being portrayed in each piece. Is there a reason for the difference in approach? (2 sentences)
• 1c: What role do you think each piece played in the society that produced it, i.e. for each piece, what did the society do with the piece and how did it affect the way the people thought or behaved? (2-3 sentences)

2. Observe the image of Chartres Cathedral (pg 431).

• Choose another (non-cathedral) work of architecture/building from chapters 16 or 17. (This can include stupas, pagodas, temples, arches, etc)
• 2a: What is the name, location, and creation date of the building you chose?
• 2b: Looking at these buildings, what are you able to tell about the cultures that produced them? What did they value? (2-3 sentences)
• 2c: Compare and contrast how the buildings are constructed. How are they similar? How are they different? (2 sentences)
• 2d: How would the shape/environment of each building affect your experience of it? How do you imagine visiting the 2 places would be different in terms of how it felt to be there? (2 sentences)
3. Select 1 image from chapter 19 or 20 that you find intriguing. This question will help to collect examples for next week’s class.
• 3a: What is the title, year, artist (if applicable), and medium of the work?
• 3b: Briefly state why this work caught your eye. (2 sentences)
