The system of checks and balances is a fundamental principle of the United States government. It is designed to prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. The system works by giving each branch of government some powers that can check the powers of the other branches.
For example, the legislative branch (Congress) has the power to make laws, but the executive branch (the president) has the power to veto those laws. The judicial branch (the Supreme Court) has the power to interpret the laws, but Congress has the power to impeach and remove judges from office.
