- Motivational Interviewing (MI): Explanation: MI is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.
1 Utilization Example: “During my internship at a substance abuse clinic, I used MI techniques to help clients explore their reasons for and against changing their substance use habits. I practiced reflective listening, asking open-ended questions, and affirming clients’ strengths and autonomy. One client, initially resistant to treatment, began to articulate their own goals for recovery after several MI sessions.”
