“A Native Hill” by Wendell Berry
“Where the World Began” by Margaret Laurence

Go for a walk near your home, trying to find a piece of nature that is familiar to you. Bring a notebook or paper with you, and write or draw a reflection about your connection to the land and your home in it. You may want to use Laurence’s or Berry’s style as a model for your own reflection, or you may write or draw in a different style. Take a picture of your written or sketched reflection and submit it. There is no minimum or maximum word count for this assignment, but it is intended to be a small assignment.

This assignment is intentionally open-ended, but a few things might help to guide you if you are using words to create your reflection:

Seek to create an encounter for your reader, drawing them into the location that you have chosen through descriptive language and attention to your own experience.
Aim to have an engaging and accessible writer’s voice.
