Asian-American Gender and culture study
In this essay will be asked to think of how gender identity and cultural identity can be understood as a performance in these following works.
1. Compare In the Family and M. Butterfly (you can use either the written play, the play at the IU theatre, or the film).
or 2. Compare the reading you have done of M. Butterfly (the written play), either with the play you have seen at the IU theater or the film by David Cronenberg.
Your essay will be a comparative study. How do these two works function in a dialogue? What new light do they shed on each other? How is the approach of the same question done in a different way? What have you learned by analyzing these two pieces? (Don’t try to answer all these answers necessarily – those are just to inspire you).
Your analysis should reflect our discussions in class, the readings we have done and thus build on the knowledge you have acquired. You should focus on analyzing specific examples you picked in the play or the film.
Your essay must have a title, a thesis, be organized into paragraphs, and have a conclusion. Follow MLA format: don’t forget the header with your name and page number. The basics of MLA formatting may be found here: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/
You may use secondary sources (criticism) to inform your arguments; if you do so, don’t forget to cite them at the end of your paper in a “works cited” section
