2.Law

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was and is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution that would guarantee equal rights for women. The ERA was originally written by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman and was introduced in the Congress in 1923 (for the first time). The proposed amendment has been through a long ratification history but has not been ratified by a sufficient number of states.

Delay or refusal to ratify has come from a number of places. Many feel that this is an of state’s rights vs. Federal control, but the main opposition argument to the proposed amendment is that equality has already been achieve through other amendments, statutory schemes and case law. Basically, the ERA is nothing more than redundant legislation that may disrupt the delicate legal balance that currently exists.
