Critical Analysis

Write a critical analysis focusing on one director. Use two or more films/literary texts, one should be from the
screening list. Find common ground for the chosen texts which explains why you put them together.
Develop your own specific topic based on required readings/lectures and class discussions. You are
encouraged to present your own original understanding and discoveries of the texts.
Your paper should identify a central thesis (i.e. a clearly articulated thesis statement) and be argued
consistently engaging two sets of evidence: textual (the narrative, aesthetics, and formal dimensions of the
film) and contextual (the specific historical, social, and political contexts of the film).
screening list:
The Red Detachment of Women (XIE Jin, 1960)

Dust in the Wind (HOU Hsiao-hsien, 1986)
