In 1976, a new code of family law was issued in Jordan, the Jordanian Law of Personal Status (JLPS). The JLPS both expanded and modified the JLFR and was described in the accompanying explanatory memorandum as aiming to provide provisions that, “meet the needs of Jordanian society, drawn from Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and various sources, and including all that is sound in the shari’a laws in effect in neighboring Arab lands.”.
