Intertextuality

When we are thinking about how one text relates to or compares with another, or how two different texts “work,” we are building an understanding of several skills: summary, argumentation, and understanding “inter-textuality.”

For this assignment, you will write a response to two texts: Sam Anderson’s In Defense of Distraction Preview the document,” and Nicholas Carr’s Google Making Us Stupid? Preview the document,” which is the article that lead to fuller treatment The Shallows.

After you read these texts, your job as a writer is to show your reader (and yourself) the connections you see between these two texts. Here are some ideas about the kinds of connections you can make:

Compare and/or contrast the two writer’s view of the same topic, e.g. “distraction.” Compare and/or contrast the two used evidence to support their views. Compare and/or contrast the two how well the two writer’s planted “naysayers” in their text. How did it affect your reading of the text? Compare and/or contrast the two writer’s use of evidence to address similar problems, topics, or issues. How did it affect your reading of the text? When you have finished both texts, post a detailed response to 1 or 2 of the above questions. Be sure to include textual evidence to support your answer.
