Is Education the Great Equalizer?

Response (minimum), use your summary of Sheff v. O’Neill and your responses to the
questions from The Children in Room E4 to answer the following:
Horace Mann stated, “Education…beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the
conditions of men—the balance wheel of social machinery.”
Using information from The Children in Room E4, how well are we living up to what Horace Mann envisioned
during the common school movement? Was education the great equalizer for the students in Hartford’s urban
school system?
In your response, 1) explain the role and influence of the courts in the desegregation/re-segregation of public
schools, 2) the overall effects of separate or segregated schools (racial isolation) and how it affected the
students at Simpson-Waverly, and 3) what research says about the effects of separate and segregated schools
(as noted by Eaton in the afterword).
