Review Jesus’ major teaching discourses, such as the Sermon on the Mount.
The God of the holy Bible is omniscient, knowing everything from the end to beginning (1 John: 20, Isaiah 46:10). God is sovereign over all his creations, whether visible or invisible; he is fully aware of the hearts of men even before they were born (Psalm 139:1-3, 15-16). God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are omniscient. Shortly after Jesus Christ was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended on him and never left him (John 1:32). It is fair to say that Jesus Christ knows about Bloom’s Taxonomy and the upgrade version by Anderson and Krathwohl. The Sermon on the Mount was an excellent example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ utilizing Bloom’s taxonomy towards engaging his disciples and followers into a higher level of thinking.
“You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may prove yourselves to be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Even the Gentiles, do they not do the same? Therefore, you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:43 – 48).
Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ started his sermons during his teaching about love at the lower level of Bloom’s taxonomy. Throughout his teaching, Jesus Christ started by saying, “you have heard” (Matthew 5: 33, 38,43). That helped his followers and his disciples remember the ancient scriptures. Jesus Christ is fully aware of the process of andragogy. Jesus provided the purpose of his teaching by explaining why they should love their enemies (Matthew 5: 45). The explanation that Jesus Christ provided addressed adult’s need to know (Mckeachie & Svinicki, 2014). Jesus Christ’s explanation of why the teaching was important helped his followers understand God the Father’s expectations and methods of application of the lot based on the information provided.
Higher-order thinking skills of Bloom’s taxonomy consist of application, evaluation, and creation are essential element of adult learning and the development of self-concept, self-directed learning, and other elements as it relates to andragogy (Armstrong, 2010; Merriam & Baumgartner,2020). Jesus Christ asked his disciples and his followers, “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same?” (Matthew 5:46) towards engaging them with higher order thinking skills. Those questions enable the disciples and followers of Jesus Christ to correlate their worldviews with the teaching as they reflect on past behaviors and work towards resolving and building new methods of following God’s love. The questions were also transformative as they challenged their worldview based on previous experience, knowledge, and misconception (Merriam & Baumgartner.,2020). Also, Jesus Christ’s humility was a model for his teaching of love in the Sermon on the Mount.
