Leadership Development


The Leadership Self-Assessment assignment is designed to help you assess your current leadership type, skills, strengths and weaknesses (aka areas for improvement). Through a selection of readings and self-assessment tools, you will learn more about who you are as a leader.

Assignment Deliverables:
The assignment will require you to (1) conduct research on leadership self-assessments, (2) take and interpret the results of various self-assessment tools, and (3) prepare a professional-looking report detailing the findings from your research and self-assessment, your comments on the process and findings, and your agreement/disagreement with your self-assessment results.

Description of Tool:

The various “Self-Assessment” exercises located at the end of Chapter 2 – Chapter 9.

B. The Ohio State University “Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire – Form XII Self” (referred to as LBDQ-XII).

Description of Tool:

The LBDQ-XII assesses leadership under the style approach (expressed in terms of two factors — initiating structure and consideration — and 12 subscales). The tool consists of two documents: (1) a 6-page PDF document containing directions and a set of 100 questions; and (2) a 14-page PDF document (called the Manual for the LEADER BEHAVIOR DESCRIPTION QUESTIONNAIRE – Form XII) containing instructions and forms for scoring and interpreting your assessment results. Must complete a form upon entering website in order to access documents.

C. Jung Typology Test

Description of Tool:

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (referred to as MBTI) assesses personality type under the psychodynamic approach (expresses your personality in terms of one of sixteen personality types). The link below takes you to a site (HumanMetrics) where you can take the Jung Typology Test (a variation of the MBTI) for free. The tool consists of 64 questions and instructions for scoring and interpreting your personality type.

D. RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) Leadership Self-Assessment Tool

Description of Tool:

The Leadership Self-Assessment tool assesses leadership in terms of four categories (training,
being available, motivating staff and improving performance) and consists of a form containing
20 questions, scoring instructions, and interpretation instructions.

E. University of Minnesota Leadership Challenges

Description of Tool:

Three (3) self-assessment tools: (1) Individual Contributor/Foundational Level; (2) Manager/Supervisor Level; and (3) Director/Senior Leader Level. As well as a Competency List for each level.
