Literature questions

Overview: We are finishing up our unit on Candide, Julius Caesar, and satire, and getting ready for our paper. To practice forming arguments and gathering evidence – you will write two quality pages (approximately 250 words each) since we are social distancing and can’t be in a typical seminar format.
Directions:—support your responses with evidence and direct quotes from literature and articles (author #).
You must answer two questions using logic and support from the texts (quoted and cited parenthetically) predominately from this week’s readings, can also use extra information from weeks one and two for #1 and #4, to be in the “A” range. (500 words)
(1) Discuss how politics, advertising, ethics and public speaking play roles in Julius Caesar and Candide.
(2) Why is moral reasoning a valuable aspect of critical thinking? Use two examples from our reading to support your response.
(3) Explain how nature works as a symbol or convention in Candide. Connect this to ideas of quality, values and life choices for the individual, and how those relate to society.
(4) Vengeance (revenge) is a recurring theme this semester. Pick three examples from those we have studied (at least two from this week’s readings) and explain how this vengeance comes to pass (causes) and what results (effects).
(5) Is this truly “the best of all possible worlds”? If not, what can we do to change it? *Use “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and Candide and any other sources from this week.
(6) Compare and contrast Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” to Voltaire’s Candide. Why is satire an effective tool?
