Order Description

We have figured out that the GDP (especially the real GDP per capita) is often used as a measure of our well-being, although technically it is not (it is rather a measure of overall production). There have been many attempts to actually measure the the quality of life (and many proposals to devise the policies that influence those indicators rather than GDP).

Research the two quality-of-life aggregates:

Write a report. For HDI:

Explain how it works (what is included and what is measured);
Give and explain one advantage of HDI over real GDP per capita;
Give and explain one advantage of the real GDP per capita over HDI;
Give an example of a policy that would likely increase HDI but decrease GDP. Explain in short.
For CIW:

Explain how it works (what is included and what is measured);
Give and explain one advantage of CIW over real GDP per capita;
Give and explain one advantage of the real GDP per capita over CIW;
Give an example of a policy that would likely increase CIW but decrease GDP. Explain in short.
Use library and online resources to support your findings and conclusions (important: make sure your sources are appropriate – for instance, an academic article or a textbook are appropriate, an opinion letter to a newspaper is not. In other words, your sources must be reliable).
