Summary, response, analysis

  • Choose a source that you respond strongly to, either positively or negatively. You may agree or disagree with all or some of what is being said in the source.
  • Consider the type of source that you choose. In this class we have seen video and audio sources, as well as argumentative and personal essays. These are all acceptable choices, but think about what challenges each source might present for this assignment.
  • Consider the length and depth of the source that you choose. You want enough information worth writing about that you can meet the page requirement, and a topic/argument that is worthy of in-depth analysis. Do not assume that choosing a short source will make this assignment easier. This paper should consist of three clearly defined parts:First, give your reader context for what you will be discussing in your analysis. Assume your reader has not read the source; you should give enough summary of your source that your reader understands the main argument, and you may want to go into a bit more detail about aspects of the source that are particularly important to your analysis. Your summary should be objective and should focus on what is being said in the source rather than on your opinion of it (you should not use “I” in this section). This should be the shortest portion of your paper (about one page).Second, respond to the source from your own emotional position or previous knowledge. Do you agree with what this source is saying? Why or why not? Does this source make you angry? Fearful? Hopeful? Does it remind you of some experience you had or make you look forward to the future? Rather than listing every emotional response, try to focus on the strongest response and really explore why this source is giving you this response. These questions are just to get you thinking. Do not answer the above questions directly in your writing. In this section you should use “I” and your writing should make it clear that you are stating your opinion.
