. Q2. Articles on bias analysis
Comparing the article of Brown, Scott, and Crawford, Tiffany written on 5th January 2020 entitled “B.C. woman fatally shot by police in New Brunswick” from the Vancouver sun news with the article of Quon et al. (2017). from Global news on 4 January 2020 entitled “Indigenous woman from B.C. dead after police shooting in Edmondson, N.B.There is a slight difference in headlines. The first article talks about B.C woman who was shot dead by policemen while the second article Indigenous woman from B.C dead after a police shooting. The first article talks about a B.C woman; therefore; it does not tell whether she’s a native or not while the second article by Quon et al. talks about an indigenous woman, which means she’s a native. There is bias through the headline. There is also bias through omission since the first article omits the word indigenous. There is also bias through description since the article from Vancouver sun describes how the woman had threatened the officers with a knife while the article from the Global news did not illustrate the issue of a knife. There is also bias through photo the photo from Global news shows some strange face of the woman while that from Vancouver sun news show how the woman looks innocent. There is also bias through placement since the article from Vancouver Sun placed the information of the woman at the beginning of the story while the article from the Global news placed sensitive information towards the end of the article. This difference impacts our perceptions as readers that we can understand similar statements from different perspectives. The difference also illustrates where the woman originates.
