The biological foundations of human behavior.
You learnt about the biological foundations of human behavior. The nervous system, which includes the different parts of the brain, contributes to behavior in many ways. Consider 1 part of the human brain, such as a specific lobe, a cortex, or a part of the limbic system, and describe a behavior that is affected or governed by this part of the brain. Explain how damage to this area of the brain may affect behavior. Why is it important to understand the role of the brain in behavior when interacting with others in your daily life?
Sample Answer
One part of the brain that is involved in behavior is the amygdala. The amygdala is a small almond-shaped structure located in the temporal lobe of the brain. It is involved in processing emotions, especially fear and anxiety. Damage to the amygdala can lead to a variety of behavioral changes, including:
- Reduced fear response: People with damage to the amygdala may show reduced fear responses to threatening stimuli. For example, they may not be afraid of snakes or spiders, even if they have been bitten or stung in the past.
- Increased anxiety: People with damage to the amygdala may also show increased anxiety. They may be easily startled or have a heightened sense of danger.
- Changes in social behavior: People with damage to the amygdala may also show changes in social behavior. They may be less interested in interacting with others or may have difficulty understanding social cues.
