Piaget and Vygotsky are two of the most influential theorists in psychology who have greatly impacted our understanding of how children learn and interact. While both theories share some similarities, there are also several key differences between their approaches that can help us gain insight into the development of children.

Piaget’s theory is often referred to as a “stage approach” which emphasizes the internal, cognitive processes that drive learning and development. From Piaget’s perspective, each stage or level is linked to certain tasks (or goals) that need to be mastered before progressing onto the next level. This process occurs through piagetian assimilation and accommodation; whereby an individual must assimilate new ideas into existing schemas while also accommodating any discrepancies encountered. Additionally, Piaget believed that knowledge was built up in successive stages rather than at once – results from this emphasis can be seen in his four stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational and formal operational (Flavell et al., 2012).
