Background: In the introduction to his book, Sandel presents us with his understanding of justice and outlines three different ways of thinking about it. He also discusses moral dilemmas and moral reasoning–suggesting that these are why we should understand theories of justice. In Chapter 2, he presents the idea of utilitarianism and the major critiques of it.

Please answer the following questions:

  2. Give an example of a moral dilemma (not one of Sandel’s), and use his concepts to explain what makes it a dilemma.
  3. Describe the two major critiques of utilitarianism that Sandel talks about.
  4. Sandel suggests that although John Stuart Mill believed himself to be a utilitarian, his philosophy has elements that diverge from utilitarianism. What about Mill’s thinking makes Sandel say that Mill is not consistently utilitarian?
