MOVING TO ACTION:
THE BAIRD METHOD

The Case of the Troublesome Tickets
THE PROBLEM:
You are an Account Manager and have spent the last three months working on getting a large sales contract
approved. You have been working very closely with the client’s owner, Charlie. During your conversations
you mentioned how much you enjoy going to baseball games. Unfortunately
, with your hectic work sched

ule you don’t get to go to games as often as you like.
One day at the office, you receive an envelope from Charlie with two tickets to Saturday’s game. Along
with the tickets is a note from Charlie that says, “I really appreciate all of your hard work and I know you
will be able to make this deal happen for me.” You are unsure whether or not you can accept the tickets, but
you don’t want to offend Charlie by sending them back.
You decide to check your company’s website to see if there is a policy in the employee handbook regard

ing gifts. When reviewing the policy on the website, you are reminded that, generally, small gifts are accept

able as long as they don’t cost more than $100 and aren’t given in an attempt to influence the employee’s
behavior. The face value of the two tickets is slightly over $100, and you know that tickets are being sold at
discounts to fill the stadium. As far as Charlie’s deal, while your manager is the final decision-maker, he does
rely heavily on your recommendations.
What ethical criteria and decision process would you use as you decide what to do with the tickets?
