Video games
Magazines
Television
Children’s Books
Music
Movies
Commercials on television
Websites
Instructions
Introduction. Paragraph 1.
State which of the above media you selected, state the specific sources you used, and briefly describe the stereotypical references that you found. This should be the first three paragraphs after your introduction, one paragraph per media source.
How do the stereotypes portray women versus men? If relevant, discuss how the stereotypes portray particular categories of women or men (based on race, class, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc.) as subordinates of individuals from dominant groups. This should be paragraph five.
What do you think are the purposes of these stereotypes? How do these portrayals benefit certain groups while disadvantaging other groups? How do the stereotypes maintain the gender system? (Discuss the ways in which we as a society enforce stereotypes to maintain the status quo. Also consider how people are treated when they do not conform). This should be paragraph six.
How does what you have learned from our text and this class help you better understand the meaning and consequences of stereotyping in the mass media? Do you think about gender in more complex ways—i.e., as not simply consisting of norms about femininity and masculinity but as a process, a stratification system or structure, and an institution in and of itself? Finally, how has this class helped you understand gender, race, class, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression? This should be paragraph 7.

Gender Stereotyping in Popular Media

Introduction

For this investigation, I have chosen to explore gender stereotypes portrayed in video games, television shows, and magazines. The specific sources I used include the video game “Grand Theft Auto V,” the TV series “The Big Bang Theory,” and the magazine “Cosmopolitan.” Each of these media platforms perpetuates different stereotypes related to gender, which I will discuss in the following sections.

Video Games: “Grand Theft Auto V”

In the video game “Grand Theft Auto V,” women are often depicted as hypersexualized and portrayed as objects of desire or victims in need of rescue. Female characters are frequently shown as submissive, dependent, and existing primarily for the pleasure of the male protagonist. This reinforces traditional gender roles and perpetuates the idea that women are inferior to men in video game narratives.

Television: “The Big Bang Theory”

In the TV series “The Big Bang Theory,” gender stereotypes are prevalent through the portrayal of male characters as socially awkward but intellectually superior, while female characters are often depicted as attractive but less intelligent. This dichotomy reinforces the stereotype that men are rational and logical thinkers, whereas women are emotional and less capable in academic or scientific fields.

Magazines: “Cosmopolitan”

In magazines like “Cosmopolitan,” gender stereotypes are perpetuated through articles that emphasize women’s physical appearance, relationships, and domestic roles. These magazines often promote unrealistic beauty standards, reinforce gender norms related to femininity, and place pressure on women to conform to societal expectations of how they should look and behave.

Gender Stereotypes and Subordination

The stereotypes portrayed in popular media often position women as subordinate to men, particularly individuals from dominant groups such as white, heterosexual, able-bodied individuals. Women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are often marginalized and depicted in stereotypical ways that reinforce their subordination to those in positions of power and privilege.

Purposes of Stereotypes in Media

The perpetuation of gender stereotypes in media serves to benefit certain groups by maintaining power dynamics and reinforcing existing social hierarchies. These portrayals uphold traditional gender norms and expectations, which can lead to the marginalization and oppression of individuals who do not conform to these stereotypes. By enforcing these norms, the gender system remains intact, and those who challenge it may face backlash or discrimination.

Understanding Stereotyping in Mass Media

Through our exploration of gender stereotypes in popular media and discussions in class, we have gained a deeper understanding of how these portrayals shape societal perceptions and reinforce systems of oppression. Gender, race, class, and sexual orientation are interconnected systems that intersect to create complex power dynamics and hierarchies. Recognizing these interlocking systems is crucial in addressing and dismantling the inequalities perpetuated by stereotyping in the mass media.
